I had always heard people fondly mention Shipshewana—a place where time slows down, and the Amish way of life thrives in simplicity and tradition. When I finally had the chance to visit this gem in northern Indiana, I quickly understood why this small town is so beloved. Nestled in LaGrange County, Shipshewana is part of the third-largest of the Amish communities in the United States, home to around 14,000 Amish residents. Though the town itself may be small, with a population of just over 700, it serves as a vibrant hub for both the local Amish community and visitors seeking an authentic experience in Indiana’s Amish Country.

11 Amazing Amish Attractions in Indiana: Shipshewana

Coming from Wisconsin, I’m no stranger to Amish farms and the familiar sight of Amish buggies traveling down our country roads. We have a wonderful Amish community that brings a touch of tradition to rural life, and it’s not unusual to see families working in the fields or driving their horse-drawn buggies.

However, unlike Shipshewana, we don’t have a centralized Amish town with dedicated stores and attractions. Visiting Shipshewana, where the entire town is steeped in Amish culture, was a completely different experience—one that immersed me in the heart of an Amish lifestyle in a way I hadn’t encountered before.

Driving into Shipshewana, I fully expected to pass an Amish buggy or two along the way. What I didn’t expect was to see Amish children out on a bike ride, or women pedaling along on three-wheel Amish bikes. And then, to my surprise, I spotted an Amish couple on a recumbent bike! These were certainly not the typical Amish experiences I had anticipated observing, but they offered a delightful glimpse into the unique blend of tradition and modernity present in this community.

Shipshewana may be a small town, but it offers a wealth of things to do that goes far beyond the usual Amish attractions. From bustling flea markets to hands-on workshops and delicious home-cooked meals, the variety of activities is truly impressive. While there’s so much to explore,

I’m going to focus on just 11 highlights that will give you a true taste of Amish culture and the unique charm of this special town. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to discover more, these experiences capture the heart and soul of Shipshewana.

1. Shipshewana Flea Market

As the Midwest’s largest flea market, the Shipshewana Flea Market is a must-visit for anyone seeking a truly unique shopping experience. With over 700 booths, it’s nearly impossible to walk out of there empty-handed. Whether you’re browsing for food, handmade crafts, antiques, or those quirky finds you never knew you needed, there’s something for everyone. The market is a treasure trove of random goods, and there’s something new to see around every corner—even beautiful murals that add a touch of art to the bustling atmosphere.

On my visit, I was specifically on the hunt for two legendary items: the ever-popular “Happy Salt” and the amusingly named BARF Jam. Both proved to be well worth the search, and I left the market with a few other unexpected finds as well. While on my mission to find the legendary “BARF Jam” at the Shipshewana Flea Market, I wasn’t entirely sure which of the Amish stores carried it, so naturally, I started asking around. Each vendor seemed more perplexed than the last.

One woman, however, topped them all—she pulled a horrified face that could only be described as a mix of disbelief and utter disgust. “We would NEVER make anything like that!” she gasped, looking at me as if I’d suggested something truly scandalous. Her reaction was so priceless, that I had to stifle a laugh.

Barn Jam

After several more puzzled expressions, I finally found the booth I was looking for, only to realize that I had misheard the name entirely—it was actually “BARN Jam.” Though slightly disappointed, I couldn’t help but laugh again when I spotted something else on the table: “BARF Salsa.” At least I wasn’t completely off!

As for the elusive “Happy Salt,” this seasoning had been touted as a miracle spice—something that could elevate just about any dish. I had heard it described as a blend of salt, garlic, onion, and other spices that worked wonders on everything from meats and vegetables to popcorn and scrambled eggs. The buzz around it suggested it was the kind of seasoning that every kitchen should have, a go-to for adding that perfect touch of flavor to any meal. After finally tracking it down, I couldn’t wait to test its powers at home and see if it lived up to its legendary status.

It did.

Now bison and buffalo are different species; bison (like the American bison) have a large hump and are found in North America, while buffalo (such as the African buffalo and water buffalo) lack the hump and are primarily found in Africa and Asia. They also differ in behavior, habitat, and cultural significance.

Um, and taste.
